How long is the race? The race is going to be 6+ miles, and will have mystery obstacles
located about every mile throughout the race.
What are some of the obstacles? They are mystery obstacles, and you will find out on race day!
They will be easy enough that anyone can complete them. We can tell you that the last obstacle in the race is the MUD PIT!
Do we share the same bike? YES. So make sure it's one that has an
easily adjustable seat if you have a significant height difference between you and your teammate.
Do we have to wear a helmet the whole time? YES. You will need two
helmets, that you will wear the entire race, even through the mud pit. The timing chips for your team will be attached to your helmet.
Can I wear headphones during the race? NO. Absolutely no headphones are allowed during the race.
Volunteers will be giving you instructions at each obstacle and you need to be able to hear them. Please, no headphones!
Does it matter who starts out running and who starts out biking? NO.
The course is 6+ miles, and you switch disciplines after each mile, so you will both end up biking 3 miles and running 3 miles. The only
advantage to having the faster biker start out biking and the faster runner start out running is that you may make it to that first
obstacle ahead of more teams.
What should I wear? Something that you don't mind getting
extremely muddy! You will be crawling on your belly through a big mudpit, so everything but your teeth will probably have mud on it!
(Even your teeth may have mud because you'll be smiling the whole time!)
How old do you have to be to do the DIRTY DUO JR? The DIRTY DUO JR is designed for
children between the ages of 5-10. It will be about a mile in length, and kids will be able to use a bike or a scooter during the race.
How old do you have to be to do the DIRTY DUO? You have to be at least 11 years old to do
the DIRTY DUO.
I want to compete in the race, but don't know if I'm in good enough shape. How do I know if I can finish
the race? If you are able to walk three miles and bike three miles then you will be able to finish the race. Also,
you will have breaks in-between the walking (or running) and the biking when you arrive at a mystery obstacle.
Can I do all of the running and have my partner do all of the biking during the race? No.
During The DIRTY DUO, you will have to alternate between running and biking with your partner. You will switch at each transition
area / obstacle.
What happens at the Transition Area? The person that is biking should arrive at the
Transition Area / Obstacle first. When they do, they will drop the bike in the designated area and complete the obstacle. Once completed,
the person will take off running. When the runner arrives to the same obstacle, they will complete the obstacle and then find their bike
and start biking towards the next Transition Area / Obstacle. In the process, they should pass their team mate on the way.
Are we supposed to share a bike during the race? Yes, you and your team mate will share a
bike during the race. If you are different heights, you can get a "quick release" adjuster for your seat post and easily move it up and
down during the race.
What type of terrain will the race be on? The DIRTY DUO will be on mostly flat, paved
and gravel roads. There will be no single track biking or technical biking. The course is set up in a way in which anyone will be able
to finish the race.
What should we bring with us to the race? Your team should bring one mountain bike or
hybrid bike, two helmets, running shoes, an old towel and clean clothes to change into after the race. You should wear old clothes and shoes during
the race, because they WILL get muddy! Also, if you plan on joining us at the post-race festival, you will need your I.D. for proof of
age if you plan on drinking adult beverages.
Can we use a road bike or a cyclocross bike? No. No road bikes, tri bikes or cyclocross
bikes will be allowed during the race. Your team must have a mountain bike or hybrid bike.
Can we race with clipless pedals on our bikes? No, you cannot wear clipless pedals. One
of our obstacles will be an inflatable, and the metal clips could pop or damage the inflatable. It also may be difficult to complete
some of the other obstacles wearing clipless pedals. Please make sure your bike has standard pedals attached; cages on your pedals are
acceptable.
